Elements: the Fire Element – Sadhguru’s perspective
In the realm of spirituality and holistic well-being, the ancient yogic traditions have always emphasised the significance of the five elements — earth, water, fire, air, and ether (akash) — in shaping our existence. Among these elements, fire holds a unique and transformative power. Renowned spiritual leader Sadhguru, founder of the Isha Foundation, provides profound insights into the role of the fire element in human life and its representation within the human body.
The Fire Element in the Human Body:
According to Sadhguru, the human body is a microcosm of the larger cosmos, and the five elements are not just external forces but intrinsic aspects of our being. Fire, as an element, is associated with transformation, energy, and illumination. In Sadhguru’s teachings, he highlights that the human body is composed of approximately 4% of the fire element.
This percentage doesn’t solely refer to the literal presence of flames within the body but symbolises the transformative and metabolic processes constantly occurring within us. The fire element is crucial for digestion, assimilation of nutrients, and the generation of energy. He often emphasises the importance of maintaining a balanced and active fire element to support overall well-being. Manipura Chakra – The Seat of Fire Energy:
In the yogic tradition, the Manipura Chakra, located at the solar plexus region, is regarded as the center of the fire element within the human body. Manipura translates to “city of jewels” in Sanskrit, symbolising the radiant and transformative power residing in this energy center. This chakra governs not only physical digestion but also the digestion of life experiences, emotions, and thoughts.
Sadhguru explains that a well-balanced Manipura Chakra is essential for maintaining physical health, mental clarity, and emotional stability. When this energy center is activated and harmonised, it radiates a vibrant energy that influences the entire system positively.

Practices to Awaken the Fire Element:
Sadhguru offers various yogic practices and meditations to kindle and balance the fire element within the body. These practices often involve breathwork, specific yogic postures, and mindfulness techniques that target the Manipura Chakra. By consciously working with the fire element, individuals can enhance their metabolic processes, boost vitality, and cultivate a heightened sense of awareness. The Fire element is the one which we are the most sensitive to. “We use fire to set the atmosphere to communicate and create receptivity and to transcend limitations.” – Sadhguru.
Incorporating Sadhguru’s insights on the fire element into our lives provides a roadmap for holistic well-being. Recognising the transformative power of fire within our bodies and understanding the significance of the Manipura Chakra allows us to continue on a journey of self-discovery and balance. By nurturing the fire element, we can illuminate our path towards physical health, mental clarity, and spiritual awakening, embracing the sacred fire within us.
