Growth Mindset

Given that this is my first blog post, I thought I would make it about mindset(s) as this site is called Vital Mindsets. The idea for the site sprung about as my partner encouraged me to share my insights from books I’ve been reading, life experience and as a way to inspire others.

You see learning doesn’t stop once you finish school. It is actually life-long! There are some people out there that think that once you start working, that you can just coast without ever having to learn anything else.

That’s like teaching your kid how to ride a bike and telling them that they don’t need to learn how to swim. What are they going to do when they go to the pool or the beach with their friends if you don’t teach them? The bike won’t be handy at the pool. They have to learn somewhere. This is where mindsets come in…

The Book ‘Mindset‘ by Dr. Carol S. Dweck does a great job about changing the way you think to fulfil your potential. It’s definitely worth the read as it may shift your paradigm entirely. In the book, she states that “the view you adopt for yourself profoundly affects the way you lead your life.”

A fixed mindset is one where you think you only have a certain amount of intelligence, a certain personality and that it cannot change further with time. A growth mindset is exactly the opposite of that, where it is understood that your basic qualities are things you can cultivate through your efforts. You can learn various skillsets, work on your aptitude, interests and experiences to change and grow phenomenally over time.

Global Identity

Now there is a 3rd mindset covered in the book called benefit mindset which related to contribution to society and humanity and I believe this applies to those who are already self-actualised or well close to the Apex of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs Pyramid. Beyond this there are plenty of other mindsets not covered in the book – and a lot of which will be covered in future posts.
